Out of Bounds is conceived as a tribute to the iconic universe of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell, moving away from a purely aesthetic reading of the work to focus instead on the role of the human figure and its relationship with technology.
The editorial evokes the dark tones and dystopian atmosphere of cyberpunk, imagining a future in which technology advances at a disarming speed, progressively taking over life itself. The human body becomes a territory of transformation: hybridised, modified, and gradually stripped of its most recognisable characteristics. The dehumanisation of the figure becomes the point of connection with the theme of Isekai Magazine's Issue N1, People Love Machines in 2026 A.D.
The desire to overcome biological limitations leads to the search for new forms of existence: figures that move beyond reality and inhabit an intermediate space between human and machine. Within this scenario, free will is not considered a bug to be corrected, but the very element that still distinguishes the human from the machine.
Ghost and Shell therefore become two distinct conditions: the shell is the vessel, the body, the matter; the ghost is consciousness, that which thinks, desires and chooses. It is the latter that represents the necessary condition of humanity.
Out of Bounds thus portrays a world in which the boundary between human and technology is not simply crossed, but continuously rewritten. A future in which the body can be replaced, modified and enhanced, while consciousness remains the last truly human territory.
